Kiaya

The Sacred Song Witch

Ethereal whimsigoth of the trees and rarely sighted in person Appalachian cryptid, Kiaya Abernathy is a Virginia-grown singer-songwriter. Her music blends mystical folklore, intuition, and acoustic melodies characterized by soulful, introspective lyrics and crystalline, honeyed vocals. A Mother, Singer of Songs, and Storycatcher of local lore on the highly-praised, interview-style podcast Rappahannock Radio. The show highlights local artists, herbalists, blacksmiths, and fellow creative creatures in Appalachia. She also hosts "Seasons of Song" workshops to help others craft songs and explore stylistic expression.

“I’m going insane and I’m taking you with me / I’m tired of playing by the rules, Kiaya starts off her album November Summer. It is her message of intent: she’s not gonna fit into any boxes that you want to put her in. But what follows are fourteen songs, influenced by the likes of The Cowboy Junkies, Stevie Nicks, and Sinead O’Connor, that make a lot of sense. “
